TheMail can authoritatively report that the Nigerian Police Force, Akwa Ibom State Command has charged over 30 women to court for alleged commercialization of sex (prostitution).
As at the time of filing this report, the women, bulk of them ex-members of the National Youth Service Corps who just passed out yesterday were chauffeured on police vans enroute the court.
Efforts by family members of the ex-corpers to bail their daughters met brick walls as the police said they have “orders from above” to charge them to court.
A female corps member who spoke to us on condition of anonymity said she was lucky to have been in the rest room at one of the joints when the police stormed the place. She said the arrest of her colleagues who were just celebrating their passing out is an infringement on their fundamental human rights, stating that the action by the police has painted Akwa Ibom in very bad light.
As earlier reported on TheMail, a team of Special Anti-Robbery operatives stormed the popular Maitama in Ewet Housing, arresting all female human beings in a raid which aim is said to weed the area of prostitutes.
Section 225A of the criminal code criminalizes sex work, most especially persons trading in prostitution. The offender can be either male or female who is aiding or abetting prostituting. The criminal code provides a two-year imprisonment for those wholly or partly living on proceeds of prostitution.
