It is no more news that the Police undertook a massive raid of all joints along Tunde Ogbeha Drive, Ewet Housing (popularly known as Maitama) last week, charged those arrested to court and the court ended up granting them bail. But what is news is that some of those women who couldn’t immediately get sureties to sign for their release were transferred to Ikot Ekpene Prison.
The transfer to Ikot Ekpene Prison was because of lack of space in Uyo prison to accommodate all those who were arrested in the Gestapo raid.
TheMail understands that not less than ten of the women were released some minutes after the Magistrate Judge granted them bail, but bulk of them passed the weekend in prison following their inability to get sureties to sign for their release.
Our sources at Uyo and Ikot Ekpene prisons who spoke on condition of anonymity said that majority of those who are still in prison are corps members who couldn’t readily get sureties as their family members who could have signed for their release are not based in Akwa Ibom.
Meanwhile, a young lady who was amongst those arrested last Thursday has missed her wedding which was fixed for last weekend.
According to our sources, all pleas by the lady to get released so she could meet up with her wedding fell on deaf ears as the police said the order from above is that she, alongside others arrested must be charged to court.
