The newly inaugurated Chairman, Governing Council of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Dr (Mrs) Akon Eyakenyi has declared that her going to the state polytechnic is to render service and use her wealth of experience as an educationist to repositioned the school for optimum productivity, in terms of skilled manpower.
Mrs Eyakenyi, who is the immediate past Minister for Lands and Housing under the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan, dispelled some rumour that her new position is demeaning to her person as a former minister.
According to her, “My first certificate to the last one, Phd is in education, what did i trained for, is to render service, experience of my training as an educationist will be brought to bear in serving my state. It is not every appointment that somebody should go looking for money, there are times you should render service, if you go into the history, a past President of Nigeria, General Yakubu Gawon was made a chairman of the governing council of the University of Plateau state.
Even in our state here, our own distinguished Senator Effiong Bob, a two term senator is currently a chairman, governing council of the University of Benin, so what is the difference, for a former Minister to accept to come and serve her people”.
Eyakenyi, who had been a school principal in many schools in the state before her advent into politics, said, at this particular time, “I don’t think there is any other better person that would have been given the position”.
She said the governing council under her leadership will work assiduously to ensure that good lecturers are employed to teach, and will also encourage professionalism in the institution. She added that the issue of infrastructures will be vigorously looked into, as the governing council will ensure that every facility is put in a proper place, so that students practical works are done properly.
Explaining the importance of her new position, Mrs Eyakenyi said, “Whoever says that this position is demeaning to me, is saying so because of lack of wisdom, there is different between a governing council and a board, i am not answerable to the commissioner, i am there to make policies that will guide the school and make it outstanding polytechnic in this country”.
She explained that her position as a former minister will really help in repositioning the school, because, she can work to the incumbent minister for education and other donor agencies and gets something for the school.
