A’IBOM ASSEMBLY VOW TO PARTNER GOV. UDOM EMMANUEL TO BOOST ECONOMIC PROSPERITY OF THE STATE


The Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke has re- stated the commitment of the sixth Assembly to the advancement of the development of the state.

 Giving the assurance, Wednesday  while declaring open a one day public hearing on the Akwa Ibom State Microfinance and Enterprise Development Agency Bill, 2016 organized by  the Joint House Committee on Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Appropriation and Finance, Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as that of Economic Planning and Development, Barr. Luke said the proposed law which is receiving the attention of the legislature is aimed at promoting widespread establishment of micro, small, and medium enterprises across the state.

Commending the executive for introducing the bill, the Speaker noted that the desire of both the executive and the legislature in the Akwa Ibom development process “is to continue to explore ways like this to encourage entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance”. He thanked the critical stakeholders for honoring the invitation of the House to make inputs towards the smooth passage of the law.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Hon. Mark Esset   described the bill as one of the priority bills of the sixth Assembly because of its potentials for developing domestic linkages for rapid and sustainable industrial development in the state. 

He said the lawmakers were ready to give Governor Udom Emmanuel the needed legislative backing to enable  him reposition the state’s economy to align with the challenges of the 21st century.   

“As we settle down to consider the issue before us at this public hearing, our contributions to the discussion of the day, must be guided by the fact that Akwa Ibom State is undergoing a renaissance; a re-evaluation, re-definition, and re-construction across all sectors of our lives. Our overreaching objective is to reposition our economy more effectively to the challenges of the 21st century. 

This is why the key policy priorities of the 6th Assembly has been that of enhancing human empowerment by making laws that will help create more jobs and opportunities for our youthful population, to promote and sustain our domestic entrepreneurs , as well as to attract new investors into our state”    


Other lawmakers who canvassed support for the  bill including, the House Leader, Rt. Hon. UIdo Kierian Akpan,  and co- Chairman of the committee, Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh, reiterated the readiness of the House to partner the state government to boost  the small and medium enterprise sector in the state for the economic prosperity of the state.

Among stakeholders that presented their inputs during the public hearing session include, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Technical Matters and Due Process, Engr. Ufot Ebong, Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Industry, Commerce and Investment, Mrs. Affiong Okpo, a former first lady and Chairman, UCCIMA, Obonganwan Imo Isemin, Managing Directors of  Microfinance banks, among other resource persons.
