A bill for An Act to Establish the National Farm Settlement and Youth Empowerment Agency And For Other Matters Connected Therewith has passed first reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill which is sponsored by the member, representing Itu/Ibiono State Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Henry Archibong seeks to diversify the nation's economy through involvements in agriculture.
The bill seeks to establish farm settlements comparable to Songhai farms that will create opportunities and capacity for the teeming youthful population and develop the host communities.
Hon Archibong, a medical doctor from Akwa Ibom State believes "that this bill when passed and signed into law will help in the much needed economic diversification so that farm settlements will be set up in every state of the federation and provided with all the basic amenities, including schools, hospitals recreational facilities etc.
'This self sustaining farm settlements will be able to employ a lot of Nigerians, train them in the art of farming, act as a source of empowerment, increase agricultural production and bring in the much needed revenue that the country so need".
