Students have been charged to make reading a culture as this will broaden their knowledge and help in a better understanding of their society.
Akwa Ibom governor's wife Mrs. Martha Emmanuel gave the charge in Oruk Anam local government area where she commissioned the Oruk Anam Community library.
The project which was constructed by the Oruk Anam local government Council in partnership with Uboms Memorial, a US based NGO is aimed at inculcating reading habit among students.
Mrs. Emmanuel who said reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body called on parents to encourage their wards to read books, adding that good books helps in expanding a child's horizon.
She commended Oruk Anam Council and Uboms Memorial for initiating the project which she said will add value to the people of the area and the state at large.
In a goodwill message, the Hon. Commissioner for education, Mr. Aniekan Akpan paid glowing tributes to the Governor and wife for encouraging and paying adequate attention to the educational sector,noting that not long ago, the Governor had approved over 600 million naira for the payment of WAEC and NABTECH exams for all secondary school students in the states.
While promising that his ministry will partner the project to provide Internet service, he called on the people of the area to take advantage of the library to further educate themselves.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the transition chairman of Oruk Anam LGAS, Prince Ubong Idiong said the project was borne out of the fact that reading culture in the past two decades have seriously decayed, and that children who are in schools do not even know what library means and looked like.
Prince Idiong stressed that the library will serve as a store house for human knowledge and will advertently open the windows of progress and development in the area.
Highpoint of the occasion was the official commissioning of the project by the Governor's wife Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel in company of a cross section of students and top government officials.
