By Daye Godsien: The Ministry of Science and Technology has taken delivery of a Makerbot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer for the advancement of Technology in the State. The donation came from the Managing Director, Digital Generation Systems Ltd,Engr. Theophilus Edet, a computer related firm based in Uyo.
According to the donor, Engr. Edet, the 3D printer is to aid the Ministry of Science and Technology in the development of skills and knowledge of Akwa Ibom Youths.
He challenged the trainees and all Akwa Ibom people to support the reality of industrialization of the Akwa Ibom State to make the State a hub of strategic technological development and economic empowerment initiatives in Africa.
Engr. Edet explained that the 3D ( three dimensional printing ) is an output device that prints 3D physical objects from engineering design software such as Autodesk, AutoCAD. He said objects like cars, houses, human parts, earrings, shoes and a lot can be printed with the 3D device.
He volunteered to train Akwa Ibom youths on the use of the device within the period of two years expressing optimism that with the passion for Technology from the Ministry of Science and Technology and appropriate training of the youths in AutoCAD, and a 3D printer, the industrialization process of Akwa Ibom State would be greatly enhanced.
Receiving the device in her office Monday 6th June 2016, the Hon.Commissioner, Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Mrs.Elizabeth Obot described the donation as an unprecedented gesture on the part of Engr. Theophilus Edet. Dr.Obot expressed gratitude to the donor for the gift and for also offering himself to train youths of the State on how to use the device noting that the donation came at the right time.
She called on well-meaning Akwa Ibom people both at home and in diaspora to take a cue from the Managing Director if Digital Generations Systems Ltd to contribute their quota towards the empowerment of youths of the State to make them self-reliant.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr.Nestor Udoh said he was grateful to God for using Engr. Theophilus Edet to answer the prayers of the Ministry in providing the 3D printer.
Dr. Udoh opined that with the current trend in Science and Technology in the State, Akwa Ibom will soon join the league of industrialized Nations. He thanked the Commissioner and the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for the passion in industrializing Akwa Ibom State through Science and Technology.
The Director 1 of ENELEC GS,Mr. Nkereuwem Eniang who is currently training some youths on power, health, agriculture and security under the Youth Economic Strategy programme said he was grateful to the donor for his king gesture, noting that with the 3D machine the sky is their starting point.
Mr. Ukeme Archibong Awan,one of the trainees expressed joy for being part of the training programme, saying within 3 weeks of the training, he can design and produce an electronic board adding that soon they will be employers of labour thereby contributing to the growth of the State's economy.
