By Henshaw NYONG, Uyo-Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Onofiok Luke, has urged leaders world over to commit themselves to empowering women.
Luke, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, spoke on Tuesday, when the executive and members of International Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA, Akwa Ibom State branch paid courtesy call on him at the State House of Assembly Complex, Uyo.
FIDA is an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in consultative status with the economic and social council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
The organization is involved in the promotion, protection and preservation of the rights of women and children. These include women's civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.
The speaker who lauded the women lawyers for their self-sacrificial work assured that the State government under the able leadership of Mr Udom Emmanuel is committed to women empowerment.
Barr Luke who observed that, "if you empower the woman, you empower the family", pledged the support of the house in assisting FIDA curb domestic Violence.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the organization in the State, Barr Mfon Edemekong, hinted that, currently, FIDA, has over 140 cases seeking justice for widows and are seriously fighting against Domestic Violence.
High point of the advocacy visit was the decoration of Speaker Onofiok Luke as the Patron of FIDA.
