The board of management at Akwa United FC are to take a decision on whether to slash their players’ salaries by half following a poor run of form in the league.
The Promise Keepers have suffered a rapid decline this season after basking in the euphoria of winning their first major title in the club history last season – the Federation Cup.
Head coach of the Uyo club, Maurice Cooreman, has been suspended by the board after a second successive loss at home to league defending champions Enyimba FC on Sunday.
The acting chairman of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium landlords, Paul Bassey, has revealed that a meeting to take a decision to half the players’ salaries will hold tomorrow.
“We have not taken a decision on halving the salaries of the players. We will take a decision on that tomorrow,” Bassey said, as reported by African Football.
“We were in Africa this year and we want to return to Africa.”
Bassey, however, debunked any claim or reports that the players are owed salaries and bonuses by the club.
Akwa United are currently 10th in the NPFL standings with with 18 points from 13 matches..
