Sledge Hammer Falls on Sand Miners--as Govt clamps down on illicit operators By Samuel Joshua



It was an inter-ministerial joint operations Wednesday morning as the officials of Ministry of Environment headed by its Commissioner, Dr Ini obong Essien, Mr Ephraim Inyang, of Ministry of Works, and officials of Ministry of Information as members of the Taskforce on Eradication of Illegal Sand Mining in Akwa Ibom State swung into action, clamped down on illicit operators. 



The first point of call was the two mining sites in Ndon Eyo River, Onna Local Government Area . The operators were caught in the illicit act where owners and one operator of the site were arrested by the police and some of their equipments impounded. 



Speaking to journalists at the scene, Mr Ephraim Inyang, in an emotion laden voice, lamented the extent of degradation of the eco system by those he described as lawless merchants, who makes money by all known and unknown illegitimate means. 



The taskforce advises all those wishing to do sand mining business in Akwa Ibom State to approach the Ministry of Environment for Guidelines on its operations. 



The operation enjoyed the complement of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Dr Ifreke Ekpa, men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the press.
