The wife of Akwa Ibom Governor, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel has called for a synergy between her pet project, Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Programme (FEYReP) and Legislators Wives Association (LEWA) towards sensitizing and re-orienting Akwa Ibom People especially the womenfolk on the need to be economically independent.
Mrs. Emmanuel stated this when she received the Legislators wives led by their President, Dr.(Mrs.) Uduak Onofiok Luke who came on a courtesy call to her office.
The governor’s wife said the need to sensitize the women at the rural level can never be overemphasized especially when most of them are not productive saying, “Let us work together to ensure that our women at the grassroots are sensitized and empowered to be self-sufficient. When they are empowered, the family will be better off.” She remarked.
The First lady bemoaned that women attitude towards involving in economic based activities was not encouraging, and stressed the need for them to be financially literates, adding that this will in turn boost the economic status of the family.
She said the administration of Mr. Udom Emmanuel as governor holds the women in high esteem, thus, has initiated life-impacting programmes targeted at making them self-reliant. The first lady promised that on her part, she will not relent on her efforts in making sure that Akwa Ibom women are empowered.
Earlier in her remarks, the President of LEWA and wife of Speaker Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Dr. Uduak Onofiok Luke in appreciation thanked the governor’s wife for granting the group audience and for her motherly love for Akwa Ibom women, saying God brought her at this time to take the women to greater heights.
Dr. Luke who said her group had long keyed into FEYReP’s vision of touching lives, highlighted the group’s activities over the past months to include visiting and donating to selected Motherless babies’ homes in the state and as well promised as a group to provide mini-libraries and ICT facility in the homes.
Similarly, the governor’s wife also received a delegation of the Veteran Journalists Executives where she called on them to impact their wealth of knowledge on the younger generation of journalists.
She said the revered profession needs to be sanitized of quackery, saying the ethics of the profession were gradually being lost. “I charge you to help in upholding the tenets of the profession. Journalism plays an important role in enlightening the public about government’s activities. It is sad that what we are seeing today does not in any way portray the profession in good light.” The first lady quipped.
In his remarks, the state chairman of the group, Chief Emmanuel Esifa lauded the governor’s wife for initiating her pet project which he said has given succor to so many families.
While acknowledging the giants strides of FEYReP, Comrade Esifa noted that his group being the fathers of the journalism profession are made of individuals who have served the state meritoriously in the public service before retirement, saying they will in a matter of months organize a training seminar for practicing media professionals in the state.
He promised that as a group, they will work towards ensuring that government activities are disseminated to the grassroots.
