Fresh political developments over the weekend indicate that a few top shots of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have concluded plans to switch to the Peoples Democratic Party.
The names of the APC chieftains who are set to cross over to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state are a former deputy governor in the state, Obong Nsima Ekere, former member of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Elder Aniefiok Thompson and another major player in the party, Otuekong Sunny Jackson.
The reasons for their planned defection have not really been stated but analysts say it may not be unconnected with recent political developments and the need to re-strategize for the next political season in 2019.
Recent newspaper reports suggest that some chieftains in the APC have interacted widely with the current state governor and are ready to work with him. The APC chieftains say their grudge was with the former governor and since Udom Emmanuel is an Ibibio son, they are ready to work with him.
The election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja recently ruled that there should be fresh elections in 18 Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State.
Dissatisfied by the decision by the tribunal, the All Progressive Congress (APC) has appealed the decision of the tribunal. In the interregnum, discussions have been on-going in several quarters and new alliances are being formed.
